Yes it is true that when the brains were being handed out we thought they said gruel and we asked: "Can we please have some more, sir?"
However, we tend to think of ourselves as gamers, artists, musicians, writers, sculptors, and even poets. Mostly because that's what we do most of the time.
We live in the foothills of California. Our barns have been converted into art and recording studios. We have sculpture studios larger than some apartments in the city. It is totally worth the extra work of telecommuting in order to enjoy the benefits of rural living. (Just minutes away from ski country by the way.) We've seen Silly Valley and we even have many wonderful friends living there. But really, given a choice wouldn't you rather be out of the valley?
We have, in fact, made a deliberate choice to prioritize our life rather than our pay grade. That means we have said ba-bye to the high priced headhunters and cut our burn rate to a point that we can afford to work when, where, and for whow we choose. Yes, we are picky. During those first negotiations, before getting down to contract, we are sizing you up as much as you are sizing us up -- perhaps more so. This is as it should be. You should want us to be as excited to work with you are we hope you are excited to have us work for you.
What does this all mean for you? Well, a couple things. One, we bring more to the table than an intimate knowledge of all things geek -- we have relationships with creative types from a diverse demographic. Two, we work a fair bit cheaper than you might be used to. We don't consider that our number one selling point. Let's face it cheaper does not mean better. However, if you can get the same quality of work for a better price -- that just makes good sense.
Why do we do what we do? We feel that we're on this mud ball called Earth for something a bit more significant than accummulating zeros in our bank accounts and dying with the most toys. It starts with working well with others and being of service where it counts.
